'Young Writers' Competition: Unite To Write

Calling all Y5 and Y6 writers!

This is the third week that we have posted the 'Young Writers' competition information for you and we really hope that you are all well on your way to completing your entries as the closing date is Friday 24th July 2020.

As we have explained before, this competition is launched every year to encourage all children to be creative and imaginative with their writing. We like to enter the competition every year at Woodlands and we are delighted to see that, this year, they have opened the competition to independent, individual entries so that, even though we are not all at school together at the moment, you can still enter yourself.

The competition is divided into two categories in the 7-11 age group ...

  • BRAIN SWAP - this section challenges you to write a poem from someone else’s point of view. You could write from the point of view of your idol, a celebrity or your pet, or from the viewpoint of a person (or even an object) from history! Use your creativity and originality to plan some ideas and then create your poem.
  • RIDICULOUS WRITERS - this category lets you be ... you! It tasks you to write a short piece, bursting alive with ideas, laughter and imagination as a mini-saga of no more than 100 words.

The 'Young Writers' website has a vast amount of information for you, including short videos to inspire you and planning sheets to help you to collect your ideas together before you write. You can even see/read previous winning entries to motivate and enthuse you further. You could just enter into one of the categories but, why not motivate yourself to 'have a go' at both!

You will have to get permission from your parents/carers before you enter the competition and they will have to help you to submit/upload your piece of writing or send it through the post to 'Young Writers' (unfortunately we will not be able to submit your entries for you through school) but you could also write a piece just for fun, if you don't want to actually enter the competition. The closing date for both sections of the competition is Friday 24th July 2020.

Either way, we would love to see the the work that you have created so, please don't forget to share your entries with us by sending them to

We hope you really enjoy it and we can't wait to read your compositions.

Have fun!
