Reception Spring Term

Date: 18th Mar 2026 @ 11:30am

This term we have been talking about how we can be kind to our friends. We have been learning how we all belong in Reception and can help each other to feel safe and happy in school.

We have loved learning a song to help us remember how to be kind to our friends.

We have absolutely loved taking ownership of our own learning with our new 'Special Interests' board in each classroom. Our teachers have also had a turn!

Where in the World?

In the first half of the term we were learning all about animals, their habitats and how they adapt to their diffeewrent surroundings. We were learning key vocabulary: Hibernate nocturnal,  and  migration.

The children loved building dens, lairs and caves for animals to live in. We looked at animals in our immediate surroundings and those that live in different parts of the world, like the North and South Pole and Jungle areas. WE used collage materials to make pictures and chose colours that reminded us of plants and trees. We loved reading books that helped us to understand habitats and we learned lots of new vocabulary from re-reading these stories.

Our 3 book studies were 'While the World is Sleeping', 'The Bear Snores On' and 'Penguin Small'.

You may want to watch Penguin Small with your child and and discuss the story.

We studied floating and sinking, how ice melts, painting ice and which materials are waterproof and help they keep us warm. We picked some animals to study and see how they survive in different climates.

People Who Help Us

We started with a crime scene in school that really got us talking about what could possibly have happened!

We wrote notes and reports and pretended to be police officers.

In the second half of the term we read a story called 'All Through The Night'. We looked at different jobs that people do.

We talked about what members of our families do when they go to work. We invited a nurse and the fire service into our school. We asked them lots of questions and looked at the equipment that they use. We had a wonderful time with the fire service as we got to sit in the fire engine and use the fire hose.

We learnt all about how to cross a road safely and watched lots of clips to teach us where to cross safely.

For the last couple of weeks of the Spring Term we zoomed off to space... 5 4 3 2 1 Blast Off

We had an exciting time thinking about what we would pack, designing aliens that we might meet, building a rocket ship and space station and learning about the planets. This is a topic that will be revisited in KS1 and the childrem have been learning key knowledge and vocabulary that they will build on and embed as they progress through the school.

We read stories by and about famous astronauts like Chris Hadfied and Tim Peake.
