Welcome to the Year 5 and 6 Class Pages
Here you will find a half-termly update of all the exciting things we have been doing.
Spring Term 1: 2025/26
It's been a fantastic start to 2026 and we have been so impressed by the energy our Year 5 and 6 pupils have brought to every lesson. From scientific experiments to creative arts, it's been a half-term full of discovery and hard work.
In Science, the children became investigators, running experiments to master the mechanics of electricity. This curiosity carried over into Geography, where we explored the amazing physical and human features of South America, and History, as we looked at the rise of Hitler and the start of World War II. As a taster towards our next history topic, where we will be diving deeper into the events of World War II, we visited Western Approaches in Liverpool. It was a fascinating experience where we were able to see the actual rooms used during the Battle of the Atlantic, including the War Room.
In English, we finished our work on the gripping novel Holes, by Louis Sachar, while in French, we've been busy learning the names of different animals. We also spent time in Computing discussing how to navigate various online dilemmas safely.
Our creative work took us on a cultural journey as we used authentic materials to paint beautiful blossom branches in our Chinese art and ceramics unit. To keep us moving, the children took part in a range of activities: some mastered a high-energy dance to Dua Lipa's Physical, others built their navigation skills through orienteering, and some enjoyed immersive sessions at Forest School.
The enthusiasm the children have brought to all their work has been impressive to see.
Autumn Term 2: 2025/26
Our Upper Key Stage 2 pupils have had an excellent second half to the Autumn Term. As well as continuing with our core subjects, we have also continued our wide-ranging and engaging curriculum. Here is a look at the key themes:
Scientific Enquiry: We became taxonomists this half term. The children explored the classification of living things, learning how to identify, group and name species using scientific classification keys.
Architectural Art: The children studied the beauty of geometry and calligraphy in art and architecture. They designed intricate geometric repeating patterns and used calligraphic writing to create their own Tuhgras.
Study of North America: We have been exploring the vast continent of North America. The children invesitigated its diverse countries, environmental regions, major rivers and bustling cities. We completed our unit of work by comparing the city of Anchorage, in Alaska, with our own local city of Liverpool, considering the unique geographic and cultural differences between these two coastal locations.
The French Revolution: Travelling back in time to 18-century France saw us studying the French Revolution. We explored the causes of the uprising, the fall of the Bastille and the dramatic changes in how the country was governed. It provided us with an opportunity to discuss the themes of democracy, rights and social change, which still resonate today.
Active Athletes: While some children have been building stamina and stroke technique in the swimming pool, others have been out on the field, honing their hockey skills. We have focused on the fundamentals of the game including ball control, accurate passing and effective dribbling.
Musical mastery: In Music, our classrooms have been alive with the soulful sound of the 12-Bar Blues. After learning about the structure and history of the genre, the children worked hard to master the chords and rhythms which culminated in whole class performances on glockenspiels.
Across the whole half term, the dedication and inquisitive spirit shown by our pupils has been amazing to see.
Autumn Term 1: 2025/26
We have been delighted with the enthusiasm of all of our Year 5&6 pupils across the first term, which has been packed with engaging, hands-on learning.
In science, we delved into the human body, exploring the essential components and function of the circulatory system (how the heart and blood work). Our geography work focused on global concepts like lines of latitude and longitude, time zones and the effects of map projection. In art, we looked at, and then tried, the printmaking techniques of relief and etching and we have also been extremely active practising whole-body circuits in P.E. and developing our skills in tag rugby.
Every child has worked hard and shown great curiosity - a wonderful foundation for the rest of the year.
