Dear Parents & Carers

We have finished the first of 5 weeks of Eat Them to Defeat Them. The children have been really motivated by this campaign; this week’s focus has been on defeating the carrots! The children have enjoyed trying the different carroty treats Holly & her wonderful team in the kitchen have prepared for them to try daily on the tasting table: carrot cake, carrot juice, carrot bread, cheesy carrot hearts; carrot sticks & humus, carrot & oat crunch biscuits, carrot & orange jelly, carrot crisps, carrot batons & carrot slices. We will Eat Them to Defeat Them! Over the following 4 weeks, we will be pulverising peppers, battling broccoli, trampling tomatoes, before finishing our campaign by pulping peas. I’d like to thank Waitrose Formby for donating the “vegetables” to use during each week of the campaign. The Eat Them to Defeat Them advert is worth a watch too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q5WSX2NI3c

Thank you to everyone who helped their children with their character spoons for World Book Day. It was great seeing so many creative ideas: a tiger (who came to tea); Charlotte (& her web); a caterpillar (who was very hungry), a giant (a Big & Friendly one), a lion (but no witch or wardrobe); a bear (who was found at a London railway station & needed looking after); a cat (in a hat). We even had a Roger Milla spoon inspired by a football book – one of the all-time greats! Follow the link if you’d like to see a whole range of spoon characters https://www.woodlandsschoolformby.co.uk/news/detail/world-book-day-spoons/

On a much more serious note, the BBC have issued some advice for children who may be upset by the news i.e. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The information provides tips about what to do if children and young people feel sad about what they have seen, heard or read in the news. Click HERE for tips and advice.

Here’s his week’s ‘nudges’. I am ashamed to say I had to Google the answer to Y5&6’s question – it probably goes to show how limited the history curriculum was when I was at school...

Nursery

{Literacy}

Reception [Red & Blue]

Can you make your own riddle up about a firefighter or police officer?

{Literacy Communication & Language}

Y1&2 [Green, Yellow & Purple]

{Science topic: ‘Animals including humans’}

Y3&4 [3A, 3/4M & 4G]

What sites could tourists see if they visit Northern Ireland?

{Geography topic: ‘Northern Ireland’}

Y5&6 [5D, 5/6P & 6R]

Who was Mansa Musa?

{Geography topic ‘Africa’}

This week our attendance is again 95.2% - not quite where we want to be (97%) but we’re on the way. Congratulations to Red Class (97.6%), Blue Class (97.1%), 3/4M (97.7%) & 6R (99.1%) for achieving attendances over 97%.

We had 5 classes who had no late marks this week: Red Class, Green Class, 3G, 3/4M, & 6R. It’s been a reasonable week for punctuality: just 15 late marks across the whole school. 11 late marks ‘before the register closed’ – that’s before 9.20am & 4 late marks ‘after the register has closed’, that’s after 9.20am.

Reminder: we have one nursery parents evening left for nursery (N2s) next Tuesday 8th March (3.30pm-6pm).

Enjoy the sunshine this weekend.

Last word

A bear walks into a bar & says, “Give me a whisky &…………coke.”

“Why the big pause?” asks the bartender.

The bear shrugs, “I’m not sure, I was just born with them.”
